SS-31 (Elamipretide, D-Arg-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH2, CAS 736992-21-5) is a cell-permeable tetrapeptide that concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane through electrostatic interaction with cardiolipin. Stabilization of the cardiolipin-cytochrome c interface preserves electron transport chain complex assembly and suppresses electron leak-driven superoxide generation in isolated mitochondria and intact cell preparations.
